About Mustaqbal University (MU)
Mustaqbal University (MU) a pioneer none profit private university registered with the Ministry of Education of Somalia started in 2012 by dynamic young Somali professionals from various backgrounds to contribute towards socioeconomic development of the nation through innovation and research. MU was started as a College of Health Sciences offering diploma and certificate courses and later registered in 2013 with Ministry of Education as Mustaqbal University.
MU is not a traditional university where learners are treated as empty vessels to be filled with knowledge but modern university that seeks to stimulate the students’ mental faculties to realize their full potential and empower them to assume leadership roles in various sectors of the economy including the health. Teaching and learning methodologies adopted in the university are student centered, an approach that allows students to get exposed to problem based learning that stimulate them to conduct research and sharing of experiences while solving society’s myriad of challenges.

MU strategic planning is the process in which the university defines its direction and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy. Our aim is to offer our students a transformational educational experience, encompassing both the academic (theory & practical), and extra-curricular, which provides them with the opportunity to fulfill their potential as an individuals by developing themselves within our living and learning community as independent learners equipped to take the responsibility for their personal development throughout their lives.
The highest overall priority proposed for the next five years is to enhance MU excellence in teaching, learning, leadership, research and creativity.
MU Strategic goals
MU has the following primary goals:
1. Academic Excellence
• MU will achieve academic excellence through excellence in problem-based learning. MU is determined to create a conducive teaching/learning environment that promotes engaged, active, and interdisciplinary learning with the ultimate goal of preparing students to be thinkers and leaders in the world.
2. Student Enrollment and Retention
• By improving access, opportunity and credibility, MU will enroll, retain, and graduate a larger and more diverse student body engaged in classroom and technology-enhanced distance learning education. MU plans to grow to 6,000 on-campus students and 10,000 on online/distance learning programs.
3. Resources and Infrastructure
• Since the action steps taken to pursue towards our vision require the allocation of new resources and the reallocation of current resources – financial, human, and physical. Therefore, MU will avail the required resources throughout the course of action.
4. Personal Development
• MU seeks to establish working & learning atmosphere that contribute to the intellectual, socio-cultural, and personal enrichment of all its participants and beneficiaries.
5. Strengthen Campus Culture
• MU will increase its efforts to make its staff, faculty, students, alumni, affiliations, and friends aware of the university’s identity and direction. MU will be known for its high level of responsiveness to community needs and interests in terms of education and community development.
Management Structure
UNIVERSITY MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE
The Board of Trustees has the legal and exclusive statuary jurisdiction, power and authority with regard to the supervision, management and control of Mustaqbal University. This role is executed through the policy-making responsibilities of the Board of Trustees. The Board in turn employs a rector as the chief executive officer and delegates to the rector the responsibility for executing the policies developed by the Board in concert with appropriate university faculty, staff, and administrators. Through Board of Trustees policies and statutorily, “there is a clear and appropriate distinction in writing and in practice, between the policy-making function of the Board of Trustees and the responsibility of the administration and faculty to administer and implement the policy.
Affiliation and Membership
Mustaqbal University has several affiliation programs with national and international learning and non-learning institutions. MU was established to respond to demand for university education in Somalia, MU started certain professional courses that seek to incubate young talent through technology, innovation and research while also mainstreaming student centered approaches that espouse lifelong learning that can advance societal development needs. To develop the student holistically the lecturers who themselves are well grounded in modern teaching methodologies use problem based learning where students are exposed early to clinical and other practical learning sites to expose them to critical thinking and problem solving. These peculiar attributes let the university to attract national & international university associations working in the field of higher education and research. Besides that, partnerships with various institutions has enabled our students to learn in some of the most prestigious learning Hospitals such as SOS Mother and Child Hospital.
Furthermore, MU is planning to extend its membership associations because MU believes that association membership is win-win situation in which member associates benefit one another through combining their resources so that they can share information and resources, coordinate research agendas, and afford each other mutual support.

In response to demand for university education in Somalia, MU started certain professional courses that seek to incubate young talent through technology, innovation and research while also mainstreaming student centered approaches that espouse lifelong learning that can advance societal development needs. To develop the student holistically the lecturers who themselves are well grounded in modern teaching methodologies use problem based learning where students are exposed early to clinical and other practical learning sites to expose them to critical thinking and problem solving. I am very pleased to report that the quality of our students is recognized by the employers in public and private sectors, who offer jobs to our students even before their graduation or announcement of the results.
Since inception MU flagship programs such as health sciences where bachelor of Nursing, Bachelor of Public Health, Bachelor of Midwifery, Bachelor of Nutrition and dietetics and Bachelor of Laboratory Sciences attract the highest number of students.
Distance learning programs have also not been left behind as MU reaches out to students in various parts of Somalia to enable them learn in their home districts while saving on cost of travel and accommodation in the city of Mogadishu. The faculties of social sciences, business studies and Education have attracted a sizeable number of students. Despite the young age MU is establishing foot prints in Somalia education and development sectors as it continues to attract students in different programs who translate their knowledge, skills and attitudes to solve societal challenges.
In an environment of mushrooming university education without regard to standards and quality MU has embarked on journey to inculcate standards and quality at the heart of all our learning programs while at the same time seeking to become a university of excellence in Somalia.
As a leading research university in the country, MU is proud of its academic excellence and the contributions of its researchers to finding solutions to local and global challenges.
